Jacob Dlamini, author of Native Nostalgia pokes fun at a series of senseless name trends while noting that he too added a “ka” to his name at one stage.
A couple of years ago a wave of kas, wahas and wakas hit black South African journalists. People born Petros Sibanibani became Petros ka Sibaninabi and Motho Semangmang became Motho waha Semangmang.Others went the whole hog, even changing or giving up on their “slave” first names. So Patrick Mamakhe became Bongani ka Mamakhe and Bethuel Babakhe became Phakimpi waka Babakhe. I did not drop my first name but I did, when the wave hit me in the early 1990s, become Jacob ka Dlamini. Seun van Dlamini. Son of Dlamini.
